Centennial Voyage of the Ensigns

2013 marks United States Power Squadrons’ 100th year of civic service, education, and fellowship.  To celebrate 100 years of USPS, a 12-by-18 commemorative 100th anniversary ensign was designed and is available from the Ship’s Store at www.shopusps.org or by calling 888-367-8777 x 0. Members are encouraged to fly their commemorative ensigns proudly and then retire them to a place of honor in remembrance of our 100th anniversary.

To recognize our 100 years of service, a special 100th anniversary ensign will be presented to each district at the 2013 USPS Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, 17-20 Jan. The district commanders will proceed from the Annual Meeting with their district’s ensign.
Squadrons are asked to design streamers to attach to these special ensigns.  Ordering information is available on the 100th anniversary website: www.usps.org/100 under downloads.  Districts are encouraged to hold ceremonies throughout their area at which squadrons will attach their streamers to the district ensign.

Then, to open the 2014 Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, 30 Jan. –2 Feb., each district commander will return his or her district’s ensign displaying the streamers of all the squadrons in the district.  After the meeting, the ensigns will return to the districts for display and in remembrance of our first 100 years.

The special ensigns will be shipped to Jacksonville in individual boxes and will include a stand, a pole, finial, and attachment ring for the streamers.

Districts are responsible for taking the ensigns home following the 2013 Annual Meeting.

Districts are responsible for returning their decorated ensigns to the 2014 Annual Meeting. At the close of the meeting, districts are again responsible for taking their ensigns home.

Special shipping arrangements will be available at the hotel.

100 years of USPS–let’s celebrate!

D8 Battle Ribbon Final Draft

A Sample Battle Ribbon

Battle Ribbon District 8

Mr. Scully,
Attached is a proof of a squadron with the layout that is approved by the national headquarters. The “D08” for your ribbon and the charter year (1939) could be red and the “DISTRICT 8” where it is written out can be white. The lettering and numbers would have their orientation as this proof, but I think that would look very nice. You do have one last option and that is to put a gold border on the ribbon because you have been in existence for 50 years or more. I can provide a proof for you if that would be helpful and please let me know if you would like the border. As always, if you have any questions or if there is anything else that I can do, please feel free to call or e-mail at your convenience.
Thanks,
Brian

Jack,
Blue is good. So here is the final design.
1. Blue   = Ribbon color
 2. White = letters for district name
 3. Red   = year of creation on ribbon

Brian,
Please put in an order for the District 8 Battle Ribbon . Send it to D8 Commander Jack Doyle, 5650 Camino Del Sol#107, Boca raton, FL 33433.
Thanks,
Bob Scully

Bob:

As the 100th Anniversary Ad hoc committee chair, will you coordinate the D8 Squadrons ordering of their Squadron battle ribbons to be attached to the
100th Anniversary Ensign Flag Staff USPS will be issuing to each District Commander at the Annual Meeting.   Each Squadron’s battle ribbon will have their Squadron Name (leave off the Sail and Power Squadron initials) on the battle ribbons and the founding date.   We also will need to order a District 8 Battle Ribbon with its founding date.  Brian Waters of Seaborn Canvas will produce the battle ribbons for the $20 fee.

The cost of a standard battle ribbon is $20, which includes the district number a squadron name and founding date. You may choose from four colors: red, white, blue, and gold. Contact BrianWaters at Seaborn Canvas to place an order.  Please allow three weeks for delivery.

Ribbons Clarification

Hi Bob: I checked with the 100 Anniversary National Committee and they suggested the D/C accept the flag sans ribbons at the Annual Meeting and then during the year when the flag is passed thru to all the squadrons and at the D8 conferences and summer rendezvous each squadron would design and purchase their ribbons and add it to the staff. We would have them all attached by the time it goes back to the next annual meeting.

At this time we could order the D8 battle ribbon and have Brian send the invoice to me.

I would try to order a banner for D8.

Squadron battle ribbons

Hi All

Palm Beach formed a 100 Anniversary committee a month ago to plan activities for the year and spoken briefly on the design of our battle ribbon.

We will order our ribbon, we ordered the 100th Banner and used it this past week end for our Holiday Boat parade, we know how to do it and we will order the ribbon when it is time, we are meeting again next Tuesday.

You might want to check with the squadrons to see what their plans are before you issue a color ribbon which might not be the color they had in mind.

Jack,

Will do.

Spoke with Brian last night. We have a plan which I sent to you in a previous email. His initial comment is that no one in D8 has ordered a ribbon. I will be talking with him later today to verify that is the case as he was going from memory.

Our plan is based on that basic premise - thus we order all ribbons for all D8 Squadrons via email. Colors are red, white and blue. $20 each. You give the order and I will place the order. Brian will send a invoice to Gillettee for the lot(15 banners). Shipping to be determined.

What say you?

Bob
