Cruise Status 10/15/13

Yes, there are still rooms available in most categories right now.  Our Centennial group currently has 375 in it-not all are USPS members.  Some have invited friends and family to join us as well.  The more, the merrier!  Here is the info about the cruise protection for you.

100 year stuff

D/Lt (P/C) Robert G. Scully N,

This sounds like a fine idea.

We should roll this out to the district if the bridge agrees.

Perhaps first we should have a suggested list of actions for each squadron to get this started. It looks like you are volunteering to be the lead person on this effort.

I would favor doing this during safe boating week as good visibility for the Power Squadron. Maybe also we should ask the boaters as they pass by to "show us your life jackets!"

Something to consider – For next years SBW theme we, D8, should think about working a plan to do a “Walk About” over a bridge. I am looking for help and guidance to make this happen. Would this be something the Planning Committee could evaluate?
A few years ago I looked at the PROLOG guide and saw a picture of a sign hanging from a bridge. A train is shown crossing over a body of water (See the reference). I thought how great it would be if I could get a bunch of folks together and walk the local bridge at noon with squadron members wearing PFDs. Someone could hold a banner or we could hang one from the bridge.
The idea did not go over well. I still think it’s a good idea. The basic issue was who wants to walk a bridge wearing a PFD in the middle of the day. One would get heat stroke. So you do it early in the am or later in the afternoon.
Next year we (USPS) will be 100. I think that we (D8) could get the various squadrons to jointly do a few bridge walks with at least 100 members at each bridge, which would be something. We could walk with the 100 flags and banners, if not PFDs wearing 100-year shirts or squadron unique shirts.
So I am hoping we can embrace the concept and explore various options and then pass along an initiative to D8 coming from the top down. Another option is to do something at the D8 July rendezvous with all present and walk the bridge next to Pier 66 at the Hyatt in Ft Lauderdale.

USPS Cent Shoe

Bob,

I've attached a sample matrix. While I understand your point in regards to Dockers, our shoes are both higher quality, more comfortable, and customizable. Retailing at $98 at stores across the country, we're the only company in the world that can customize a boat shoe in such a manner. In past deals that we have worked on with corporate/organizational/charity clients, we provide discounted pricing as long as we are guaranteed a minimum order of 40 pairs.

With a minimum of 40 pairs in place, we can provide our wholesale drop ship pricing of $60 + $9.95 S/H.

We can discuss how payments would work as well, but it is not typically common practice in the shoe industry to discount the product, which will be resold at an event like your, without a "bulk" order. It would be great to come up with a solution that will work for both of us.

If you plan to sell it on your retail site, then the pricing would be the same, but we would take care of fulfillment again and I would expect that you would markup the shoes to the $98 price point for profit.

Regards,
Jason

Custom Boat Shoes - 100 Year

Yes. Will be in and out but will have my cell phone with me (772-453-4966). Note: United States Power Squadron will be 100 Years Old Feb. 2014. Thus we are in the process of coming up with many ideas about how to celebrate and things of that  nature.

Details here........http://www.usps.org/100/

My idea is to have the 100 Year logo (as shown)  embedded in the leather top of a boat shoe. They say that USPS has over 40,000 members. I have no idea how many would consider buying your shoe, as there are too many variables to consider.

I propose you make a few samples, in different sizes and colors, and donate them to the District 8 Executive Committee so that they might auction them off at the next Fall Conference. That would generate interest.

Also provide a proposal for some quantity with prices and think about joining us at the National Conference in Jacksonville, Fl.29 January-2 February 2014 Annual Meeting Hyatt Regency Jacksonville, FL with shoes in hand ready to sell or maybe set up a booth at the USPS Expo and take orders.

Another alternative is to establish a great price for the boat show and we could advertise it in our Ensign magazine as a Memeber Benefit and also post it on our the national website under "Member Benefits". There are definite benefits to both of us if the "Price Is Right".

Bob Scully

Safe Boating Week - Heard on the water

Safe Boating Week - Heard on the water

District 8 is getting charged up about the Safe Boating Week coming up in May. What’s a safe boating week? It is nationally recognized as the week to promote safer boating.  This year it falls on May 18 - May 24, 2013.

What’s a District 8? There are 15 boating squadrons (United States Power Squadrons) in district 8 from Sebastian to Key West, Florida. Information about this district can be found at http://www.uspsd8.org/. All of the groups within the district will be putting on special events to help promote this week. If you would like to share in these events contact the squadron of your choice.

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) plans to hold boating classes and seminars at the VBPS facility, which is next to the Barber Bridge (301 Acacia Road). According to a reliable source VBPS will be in the” Wear It” campaign (http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/) as well.

An unverified rumor suggests that some of the 392 members of the squadron may walk the Barber Bridge wearing/holding PFDs sometime during the cooler part of the day. Check out the VBPS new website www.verobeachpowersquadron.com or stop in on any Friday night during the social hour (5:30-7:30).

What is NSBC (http://www.safeboatingcouncil.org/)? The National Safe Boating Council, Inc. (NSBC) was organized in September 1958 under the name National Safe Boating Committee. The NSBC presently has a membership of over 330 U.S. and Canadian organizations, all with an interest in boating safety and education. The NSBC membership is diverse, with approximately 65% of the membership being nonprofit organizations and 35% being for-profit organizations. Mission Statement -The NSBC’s mission is to be the foremost coalition to advance and promote a safer recreational boating experience through education, outreach and training.

What is United States Power Sqauadron (USPS)? If you are looking for boating classes, or a complete boating education, you've come to the right place. If you are looking for a Maritime Mobile Service Identity, you've come to the right place. If you are looking for someone to perform a free vessel safety check on your boat, you've come to the right place. If you would like to have some real fun boating, join the 40,000 members of USPS and help spread the word. (http://www.usps.org/)?

A note from - D/Lt Allan B. Furtado, SN

Sent: Thursday, January 24, 2013 1:40:44 PM
Subject: Battle Ribons for 100 year Anniversary .

To all Squadrons in District 8:

At the USPS 2013 Governing Board at Jacksonville last week each District was
given an Ensign with the new 100 year logo on it to be taken back to the
home District.  During the year each Squadron is to purchase a "Battle
Ribbon" to be attached to this new District Flag and then the District Flags
are to be returned to same meeting next year.

The Battle Ribbons are to be about 2 ft in length, and about 3 inches in
width, with the District number at the top, Squadron Name in the middle
(with out the words Sail or Power) and the year of founding at the bottom.
These ribbons have the flowing options:
Color of Ribbon: Red, White, Blue and Gold.  These colors are the ones
presently in the National Ensign with the 100 year logo.
Color of Type Face: same as above Red, White, Blue and Gold.
If the Squadron is over 50 years old a gold stripe is available like the
ones on our Burgees.

I was trying to  put together a wish list for your Squadron and place one
order with Seaborne Canvas.  This would save you time and some shipping
cost, which would be shared  by all the  Squadrons.

I understand that Coral Ridge, Hollywood and Palm Beach Squadrons have
already ordered their Battle Ribbons.

If you want me to place your order, I will call your Commander and get all
the necessary information for your Ribbon.  If you do not want me to
do this for you please let me know.

The cost of the Battle Ribbon is $20.00 + shipping.

I am sending this email to insure that all Squadrons have their Battle
Ribbons ready for our April District Conference.     The Conference will
have a  ceremony focused on the Ribbons.

Sincerely,

Al Furtado

D/Lt Allan B. Furtado, SN
